I cannot walk past a record shop or second hand shop easily without popping in and thumbing through the racks, on the off chance that there might be some hidden gem I have been looking for over the years. Also the chance to pick up some new music that perhaps I haven’t heard before, or a band I’d heard about, but never actually heard their music.

I relate to the project as vinyl holds memories. It has something special that goes along side music it holds in its grooves. The memory of the song is matched with the crackle when you play vinyl. I can remember when scratches occured on the vinyl I possess and the parties that they have attended.

Here in Boise we have a great local record store that finds new and innovative ways to stay in the game, and I’m hopeful ‘Sound it Out’ can help all record stores worldwide!

. I not only want to see record shops like Sound It Out survive, but I’d also like them to be celebrated, revered, and to see them proliferate.

My first Saturday job was working in my local record shop – they’re powerful places, libraries for those whose neurotransmitters are craving particulars sound. Unfortunately, vinyl shops are becoming more like dusty old museums. This film captures history.

I have also known a few vinyl-junkies and they are an odd lot, worthy of documenting.

I wanted to say something about in the dark ages monks kept the light of civilization alive in isolated monastic communities beset by rampaging vikings. Tom is no Saint Cuthbert and Stockton is certainly no Holy Island but you know what I mean.

I funded this because Jeanie is an amazing director who I would trust with any story and any characters and make them magical.

I think there’s a place for the preservation of certain cultural treasures, and we all (ok… those of a certain age) have experiences of the record shop.

Jeanie’s style of documentary making carefully explores the story and she has a lovely lightness of touch that allows her subjects the freedom to share their stories openly.

The following amazing people have supported SOUND IT OUT. It’s still not too late to support SOUND IT OUT on Indiegogo. Help us go from Teeside to Texas for the world premiere. THANK YOU so much for supporting an independent film about an independent place. Your help is invaluable.

Synopsis

Glimmer Films in association with Sideshow present a film by Jeanie Finlay; SOUND IT OUT.

Over the last five years an independent record shop has closed in the UK every three days.

SOUND IT OUT is a documentary portrait of the very last surviving vinyl record shop in Teesside, North East England.

A cultural haven in one of the most deprived areas in the UK, SOUND IT OUT documents a place that is thriving against the odds and the local community that keeps it alive. Directed by Jeanie Finlay who grew up three miles from the shop.

A distinctive, funny and intimate film about men, the North and the irreplaceable role music plays in our lives.

High Fidelity with a Northern Accent.
